AJ's Restaurant
A mall-side Nashville stop where a French dip, a burger, and a pair of Stellas make AJ's feel far more deliberate than a shopping-center meal has any right to.
AJ’s Restaurant sits inside Opry Mills, which is not usually where anybody goes looking for revelation. That is part of the appeal here. The place is clearly trying to be more than a food-court afterthought, and a meal built around a French dip, a burger, and two Stellas makes a decent argument that it succeeds more often than a mall address should allow.
The French dip is the plate that earned the camera, and it is easy to see why. In the photo, thick-cut fries crowd the foreground while the sandwich lands as a real stack of roast beef, melted cheese, and onions on toasted bread, with a metal cup of jus waiting behind it. The menu fills in the rest of the picture with creamy horseradish and Monterey Jack, which makes this less of a polite sandwich and more of a commit-to-it lunch.
The burger takes the simpler lane, which is probably the right move when there is already enough richness on the table. Two Stellas keep the whole thing from turning heavy or self-important. That combination gives AJ’s a useful kind of balance: hearty enough to feel like an actual meal, casual enough that nobody has to pretend they planned the day around it.
That may be the best version of what a place like this can be. AJ’s is not asking you to forget you’re at Opry Mills; it is just making the case that even in the middle of shopping traffic, a burger, a French dip, and a cold beer can still feel deliberate instead of disposable.
