City Works

Pregaming is its own meal category. It should be social, shareable, and substantial enough to count without becoming the night’s main event. Meeting my buddy and his friend at City Works before PRESIDENT called for exactly that kind of order: food built for reaching across the table and a beer interesting enough to mark the occasion.

Smoked Brisket Reuben Egg Rolls are an argument against restraint before anyone has even left for the show. City Works folds brisket, bacon-braised sauerkraut, and Gruyere into wonton wrappers, then sends out mustard aioli and chipotle Thousand Island to negotiate the consequences. It is the Reuben converted into bar-food geometry—less sandwich, more shared declaration of intent.

The Crispy Smoked Wings kept the table on familiar ground. Wings do not require ceremony or explanation; they understand that a pregame has momentum to maintain. The A Wake Coffee Blonde was the useful curveball, a golden ale from 3 Daughters Brewing carrying coffee into a glass that looks determined to keep things uncomplicated. That contradiction made more sense here than another anonymous light beer would have.

City Works is a large sports bar in Disney Springs, and subtlety is not the job. The job was to give three people a proper runway toward PRESIDENT without asking dinner to compete for the headline. Egg rolls with unreasonable ambition, smoked wings with no need for reinvention, and a coffee blonde that supplied the one surprise: City Works understood the assignment and stopped precisely where a good pregame should.
