Dutch Maid feels like the sort of bakery that existed before anyone decided bakeries needed exposed brick, Edison bulbs, and a social media strategy. There’s history in the place, the smell of butter and sugar hanging in the air, display cases filled with things made for the simple purpose of making somebody’s morning better.
A pumpkin cream turnover and a cup of drip coffee is exactly the right way to approach it. The pastry is flaky and unapologetically sweet, pumpkin and cream tucked inside layers that scatter crumbs with every bite. The coffee is hot, straightforward, and entirely uninterested in impressing anyone. Together, they work. Sugar, caffeine, butter. Civilization has been built on less. Then an oatmeal cookie, substantial and chewy, the kind of cookie that feels almost wholesome until you remember it is, thankfully, still a cookie. Alongside it, a cappuccino brings a little refinement to the proceedings. Espresso, steamed milk, foam. Nothing complicated, nothing necessary beyond enjoying it.
There are places where you order the elaborate thing because that’s the point. Dutch Maid isn’t one of them. Here, you get something baked, something hot to drink, find a seat, and let the morning take its damn time.
