Ru Ru's Tacos & Tequila

Not every stop deserves the full mythmaking treatment. Sometimes you are just looking for a cold beer, a place to sit for a minute, and somebody behind the bar who knows the neighborhood better than you do. Ru Ru’s Tacos & Tequila seems to understand that role just fine. In downtown Charleston, it worked less like a destination meal and more like a useful pause in the night, the kind of place where a Pacifico and a Corona Light can buy you both a breather and a better next move.

The photo tells you a lot about the tone. One beer is still in the bottle, the other is poured into a branded glass with a lime wedge hanging off the rim, both sweating onto the bar while the room glows in that familiar mix of televisions, bright wall color, and low-stakes conversation. Nothing about it looks overdesigned or overly reverent. It looks like what it is: a casual bar stop attached to a Mexican-leaning restaurant that knows cold beer is sometimes the main event.

What makes this one memorable is not some grand dish or transcendent cocktail but the bartender doing exactly what a good bartender should do. Asked where to go next, they pointed toward The Griffon. That kind of local guidance matters more than a lot of menu copy ever will. Ru Ru’s sells itself on tequila, margaritas, and Mexican-inspired food, but in this version of the visit, the real value was as a place that got the night moving in the right direction.

The trade-off is that if you are looking for a meal worth circling the block for, this note does not make that case. But if you want a Charleston beer stop where the bartender can help you drink smarter than your map app, Ru Ru’s Tacos & Tequila sounds like a perfectly solid call.
